After Germany, France and Spain, the Austrian EPR Compulsory Compliance has also entered the ranks. Recently, Temu platform issued a notice to ensure that the products sold on Temu platform comply with Austrian laws and regulations. Austrian sellers are explicitly required to upload their EPR registration number within 4 weeks, otherwise their products will be at risk of being taken off the shelves.
Since the Austrian regulatory system does not support the platform's withholding of EPR fees, sellers to Austria need to report and submit EPR compliance qualifications to the platform.
What is the Austrian EPR system?
EPR stands for "Extended Producer Responsibility". According to Austrian regulations, any company that produces, imports or sells goods that meet the requirements of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) must fulfill EPR obligations to ensure that these products are properly handled and recycled at the end of their useful life.
What types of Austrian EPRs do sellers need to register?
The Austrian Government implemented a new version of the Austrian Waste Management Act and established a system of mandatory compliance covering household packaging, electrical and electronic equipment, batteries and accumulators.

Austrian Packaging
The Austrian packaging law is a regulation aimed at managing and reducing packaging waste. Under the law, any business selling products in the Austrian market must comply with a number of packaging requirements and ensure that the packaging materials they use meet sustainability and recycling standards. Key requirements include:
Packaging is made from recyclable materials;
To provide information on recycling and reuse of packaging waste;
Pay the packaging recycling fee.
For sellers, if the products they sell on the Austrian market involve packaging, they must comply with Austrian packaging laws to ensure that their packaging meets the relevant requirements.
WEEE Directive
The WEEE Directive is an EU regulation on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) that aims to facilitate the recycling and disposal of such equipment in order to minimize negative impacts on the environment. In Austria, the implementation of the WEEE Directive requires manufacturers, importers and sellers to fulfill a series of obligations, including:
Provide recycling and treatment programs for WEEE;
Payment of a corresponding fee for the disposal of waste equipment;
Label products to instruct consumers on the proper disposal of waste equipment.
Sellers must comply with the requirements of the WEEE Directive when selling electrical and electronic equipment on the Austrian market and ensure that their products are properly handled and recycled at the end of their useful life.
Austria's Battery Law
Austria also has strict regulations regarding the management of batteries. Sellers must comply with the following requirements when selling battery products on the Austrian market:
Provides information on battery recycling and disposal;
Payment of fees for recycling and disposal of batteries;
Label products to instruct consumers on the proper disposal of waste batteries.
As with other electronic products, sellers of battery products need to comply with the requirements of the WEEE Directive and ensure that their products are properly handled and recycled at the end of their useful life.
When do I need to register my Austrian EPR number?
According to the relevant Austrian regulations, sellers are required to register an EPR number in the following cases:
Selling electronic or packaging products in the Austrian market;
The sale of WEEE in the Austrian market is governed by the WEEE Directive;
