Three words to solve the problem of Amazon compliance: understand the latest prohibited categories, prepare compliance documents in advance, and make good use of the official compliance tools. Recently, cross-border sellers in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., France, Italy, Germany, Spain and other sites have received notifications of updates to Amazon's compliance policy, involving as many as 12 sites!
The scope of this compliance update is shocking. It is far more stringent than general policy adjustments, with two new banned categories and eight new pre-sale review categories. Specifically, the U.S. bans the sale of "LED headlight conversion kits", Canada bans the sale of "breathing patches", and the U.K. and many other European countries ban the sale of "electric vehicles", "electric vehicle", "electric vehicle accessories" and "children's toys" in the UK and Europe.
Amazon sellers need to be especially aware that these categories have specific deadlines for compliance documentation! For example, LED headlight conversion kits are restricted from being sold in U.S. stores starting October 31, 2023 because they do not meet federal motor vehicle safety standards. And electric vehicles at European sites must submit and pass compliance by November 23, 2023, or risk being removed from the shelves.
There are also compliance requirements and deadlines for sports supplements on the Australia site and magnetic ball assembly toys and highly absorbent resin toys on the Japan site. If you believe an item has been misclassified, Amazon also offers a complaint channel, but only if you provide sufficient evidence.
After all, compliance isn't just an option, it's a basic requirement for running an Amazon business. Fortunately, Amazon provides two tools, "Compliance Reference" and "Manage Your Compliance", to help sellers easily cope with compliance challenges. These tools cover a wide range of compliance policies, making it easy and efficient to view multinational compliance requirements without having to jump through hoops to register.
