You would never have imagined that the European compliance is so complicated! As a cross-border seller from Taiwan, you want to fight for the gold in Europe, but you are confused by the terminology such as VAT tax code, packaging law, WEEE and CE marking, etc.? Don't worry!
The size of the European market is amazing, and the opportunities are endless, but the compliance issues can be daunting for many novice sellers. What is VAT, what are the packaging laws, what is WEEE? And most of all, do you have to fulfill every single compliance requirement?
VAT compliance is a must for all European sellers! Simply put, if you store inventory in the UK or EU, you must apply for a VAT number for the country in which you store your inventory. This is the first step to ensure the smooth sale and long term operation of your store, which is indispensable!
What I am going to tell you may change your mind. Different types of European station sellers, due to the different sales destination countries and types of goods, but also need to complete different compliance requirements. For example, German sellers should pay special attention to: if you sell goods with packaging, you need to upload the LUCID registration number in advance and pass Amazon verification; if you sell electrical and electronic equipment goods, you need to provide the WEEE registration number; from June 5, 2023, goods that do not meet the compliance requirements may be suspended!
Even more importantly, EU website sellers of CE-marked goods (such as appliances and toys) must have an "EU Responsible Person" located in the EU as a compliance contact for the goods. If you are selling CE Marked goods that were manufactured outside of the EU, not only do you need to ensure that there is an EU Responsible Person, but you also need to post the contact information of the Responsible Person on the goods.
