Do you know why many Amazon Europe sellers suddenly lost their selling privileges? The reason may be the verification of VAT registration information! In order to comply with the requirements of tax authorities in the EU, UK, Norway and Switzerland, Amazon must collect and verify sellers' VAT registration information to ensure tax compliance.
What I'm about to say may change your mind. Many sellers are under the mistaken impression that providing a VAT number is enough, but Amazon also verifies that the VAT registration information you provide (including legal name and address) matches the information stored in the official tax agency database. If it doesn't, you will be asked to update the information, otherwise your selling privileges may be restricted!
To be compliant, you must meet two conditions: first, register a valid VAT registration number for all countries with tax obligations; and second, ensure that the VAT registration information you provide on the seller's platform matches the legal name and address in the official tax agency's database.
One of the most frustrating things is that many sellers don't realize that there are multiple options for VAT registration addresses! The types of addresses that Amazon accepts include legal addresses, VAT group representative addresses, fiscal representative addresses, tax agency addresses, service provider addresses, and more. If you provide an address that is not a legal address, you may need to provide additional information to prove that the address is related to your company.
If you have been notified of a request for valid VAT information, please log in to the SellerPlatform and go to the Tax Setup page to update your information immediately. Once verified, your selling privileges will be restored, but this process can take up to a week.
What's even more outrageous is that many sellers don't know where to check the status of their VAT registration number and associated address! UK sellers can check their VAT registration number status through the official HMRC VAT checking website, while EU sellers can check their VAT registration number status through the VAT Information Exchange System (VIES). German and Spanish sellers need to pay special attention to the fact that the VIES website can only check the validity status of the VAT number, but will not display the specific name and address information.
