Taiwanese cross-border sellers who regularly sell electrical appliances to Japan should pay attention! As safety standards continue to improve, PSE certification has become a must-have ticket to enter the Japanese appliance market. Did you know? Even the most high-quality Taiwan-made electrical products, if the lack of the correct PSE certification, in Japan on Amazon platform will face the risk of shelving.
I didn't realize that safety certification for electrical appliances could be so complicated! Japan's Electrical Appliance and Material Safety Law (PSE) divides the 457 regulated electrical products into two categories: 116 "Specified Electrical Appliances" (Category A) and 341 "Non-Specified Electrical Appliances" (Category B). This is not a simple categorization, but is a key factor in whether a product can be legally sold.
Category A products, which are considered to be of higher risk during use, such as AC adapters and power extension cords, must be certified by a certification body authorized by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) of Japan and use the diamond-shaped PSE mark; while Category B products, such as televisions, air conditioners, and LED lamps, require that the manufacturer notify the METI of the compliance with the technical standards in advance, and use the round-shaped PSE mark.
To sell electrical products on Amazon Japan, you need to submit relevant information and documents to the designated mailbox (jp-electronics-safety@amazon.co.jp) to make an application. Depending on the product type, the required documents vary. For example, Type A products require a copy of the business record, a photo of the label, and a certificate of conformity, while Type B products require a copy of the business record, a photo of the label, and so on.
What's more, Amazon Japan has special rules for lithium-ion batteries and completely prohibits the sale of all cylindrical lithium-ion batteries, including 18650, 14500 and other models. This is an important detail that many Taiwanese sellers tend to overlook.
Amazon Japan also categorizes common electrical equipment into 43 types in seven categories, including AC/DC power supplies, lithium-ion batteries, lighting products, home heating equipment, cooking appliances, grooming appliances, and large electrical equipment. Each category has specific compliance requirements that sellers must understand and follow.
