3 Copyright Cases, 100+ Picture Rights Storms!
Have you noticed? Recently, there have been 3 cases of copyright infringement in the cross-border circle, involving more than 100 copyrighted images! This is not just an isolated case, but reflects the current trend of increasingly stringent IP protection for cross-border e-commerce. It is important for Taiwanese cross-border sellers to understand the details of these cases.
The first case involved Yumei Shi, a seller in the field of children's clothing. The real concern is that her lawsuit involves 31 copyrighted works, including more than 100 drawings and 18 illustrations of children's clothing. Case No. 2025-cv-21509 was filed on April 1, 2025, and is represented by Reiner & Reiner PA. More notably, a preliminary injunction was granted on May 5, meaning that the defendant sellers' sales activities may have been curtailed.
The second case is from freelance artist Tane Hannah Meets, Case No. 2025-cv-05079-05088, whose artistic style has been described as "a combination of whimsical charm and refined aesthetics" and whose work ranges from watercolors to digital graphics. Cross-border brand owners need to be alert to the fact that copyright protection for such original works of art is being strengthened.
The third plaintiff, Elena Kolotusha, a Russian-born artist now living in Australia, Case No. 2025-cv-05110, is known for her meticulous animal paintings and surrealistic still-lifes, particularly her depictions of animal hair.
For cross-border e-commerce sellers, especially Amazon sellers and novice store owners, these cases remind us that we must pay attention to intellectual property protection.
